The Simon Companies Garners Honors from Institute of Real Estate Management

Company Founder Franklin W. Simon Earns Lifetime Achievement Award; Mellen and Jenner also Receive Accolades


BRAINTREE, MA – The Simon Companies, a professional developer, owner and manager of commercial and multifamily real estate, has been named as the recipient of five prestigious year-end awards by the Boston chapter of the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM), including a Lifetime Achievement Award for The Simon Companies’ founder and President Franklin W. Simon. In addition, three Simon property managers earned Accredited Residential Manager (ARM) certification from IREM, an international organization for real estate management professionals.


Franklin W. Simon, recipient of IREM’s 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award, is one of the region’s leading authorities on multifamily housing. He had already developed some of Boston’s most high-profile buildings by the time he formed The Simon Companies in 1966. During the course of his career, Mr. Simon has developed numerous commercial buildings and more than 7,000 residential units in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire. A highly decorated World War II Army veteran, Mr. Simon earned a degree in engineering from the University of Rhode Island and a master’s degree from Harvard Business School. He has lectured extensively at Boston University’s College of Business, Tufts University and numerous professional seminars.


Christopher Mellen, vice president of The Simon Companies, is the recipient of IREM’s Certified Property Manager (CPM) of the Year award for 2011. In addition to holding a Certified Property Manager designation, Mellon is an Accredited Residential Manager (ARM) and a licensed real estate broker in Massachusetts. He is an active IREM member with both the Boston chapter, for which he has served in every officer position including president in 2004, and at the national level, where he has served as regional vice president, assistant chairman of the Education Committee, executive councilor and, currently, as senior vice president. Mr. Mellen has twice been named Real Estate Executive of the Month by the New England Real Estate Journal and is a member of IREM’s Academy of Authors. He is on the faculty of Boston University and IREM. Mr. Mellen earned a bachelor’s degree in real estate from Temple University, and a master’s degree in management and a graduate certificate in project management from Boston University.


Also being honored by IREM is Gregg Jenner, a senior property manager with The Simon Companies, who was named the Accredited Residential Manager (ARM) of the Year for 2011. Mr. Jenner joined IREM in 1988. In addition to the ARM designation, he is a Certified Property Manager. He has held numerous positions with IREM chapters across the country, most recently as treasurer of the Rhode Island chapter and currently as a Boston chapter executive council member. A resident of Abington, MA, Mr. Jenner oversees a mixed portfolio of assets located throughout New England for The Simon Companies.


Two properties owned by The Simon Companies also have received accolades from IREM. The Towne House Apartments, an 84-unit, two-building high-rise apartment community in Quincy, MA, and Olde Derby Village Apartments, a 139-unit, garden-style community in Norwood, MA, were awarded two of the four first-place awards in IREM’s 2011 Landscape Contest. The Towne House Apartments was honored in the Urban $1-$2,000 category, while Olde Derby Village Apartments was tops in the Suburban $1-$5,000 category.


In addition to the contest awards and year-end honors, three property managers from The Simon Companies have earned Accredited Residential Manager (ARM) certification from IREM. Earning ARM designations are Tyboramy Young, Saundra White and Eve Marche. IREM promotes ethical real estate management practices through its credentialed membership programs. These esteemed credentials certify competence and professionalism for those engaged in real estate management.
